First-Time RV Rental Checklist: What to Confirm, Bring and Skip
Prepare for your first RV rental: confirm included supplies, pack what is missing, and plan pickup or delivery, the walkthrough and return.

Start your first RV rental checklist with the booking you actually have. A rental may include bedding, kitchen supplies and connection equipment, or leave some of those items for you to arrange. A photo of a furnished RV does not answer every inventory question.
Separate your preparation into three lists: confirmed as supplied, things you will bring, and questions awaiting an answer. Keep an unanswered item on the question list rather than treating it as included or immediately buying a replacement. This guide explains that process; Rental Prep turns your own confirmations into a checklist.
Choose the right plan: drive, tow or stay in a delivered RV
If you will drive the motorhome or tow the trailer, ask about the vehicle dimensions, permitted travel, relevant driving or towing requirements and the walkthrough. Confirm which connection and setup equipment travels with the RV.
For a delivered, stationary stay, agree who positions the RV, connects utilities, services tanks and collects it. Delivery and setup are services to confirm, not a promise that every task is included. If the RV will be delivered and then driven elsewhere, use the drive/tow plan and confirm the delivery arrangements separately.
Confirm the supplies before making a packing list
Check the listing and ask the host about bedding and bed sizes, towel quantities, cooking and eating equipment, cleaning and bathroom supplies, outdoor chairs, and a first-aid kit and flashlight. Ask whether any optional package carries an additional charge.
For a road trip, also confirm the shore-power cord and protection, drinking-water equipment, waste-system equipment, chocks and leveling tools that apply to this RV. Ask for a demonstration of unfamiliar equipment. A host confirmation is about the specific booking; it does not mean that another RV from the same company has the same inventory.
Pack personal essentials and the confirmed gaps
Prepare your personal medication, toiletries, clothing for the forecast, suitable footwear and chargers. Plan food and drinking water around the storage, refrigeration and water access you have confirmed. Add missing household items from home where practical.
Then review the inventory gaps. If towels are included but not bedding, your packing list should reflect that distinction. Optional chairs can be marked not needed if you will not use them. Avoid turning a short rental into an equipment-upgrade project: installed solar, a replacement house battery and permanent accessories are not default renter purchases.
Check the reserved campsite, not just the campground
Confirm electricity and amperage, drinking water and sewer at your actual pitch. Ask separately about shared fill points and dump stations. Full hookups normally means power, water and sewer at the site; partial hookups provide only some of those connections. Confirm the details rather than relying on a label.
For example, electric and water with a shared dump station is not sewer at your pitch. Ask the host how that affects the RV's tank plan. For delivery, also confirm campground permission, access and the agreed arrival arrangements with both parties.
Use handover to understand this particular RV
Review existing condition and included items with the host, keeping your own photos and agreed notes. Ask for a demonstration of the controls, appliances, power limits, water and waste systems, and where the manual is kept. Locate exits, alarms and the extinguisher together.
For drive/tow trips, request the relevant driving, towing and setup walkthrough before taking the RV. For a delivered stay, ask which controls you may use and whom to contact for a setup or tank problem. A preparation checklist supports the conversation; ticking a box does not replace the walkthrough or an inspection.
Agree on return or collection before the trip starts
Check the return time, location or collection arrangements, key handoff, cleaning standard, rubbish disposal and included-item inventory. Ask who handles tanks and any associated charges. For a driven or towed RV, confirm the agreed fuel, propane, mileage and generator-hour requirements.
Keep the host and support contacts available offline. Use the current booking and agreement for the actual requirements: do not assume a cleaning fee includes tank service, or that a delivered stay leaves teardown to you.
Example: turn confirmations into a useful list
Illustrative example, not a real booking: a family has a stationary delivered rental. The host has confirmed bedding and kitchen basics, has not answered the towel question, and the family will bring a flashlight. Chairs are not needed.
In Rental Prep, mark bedding and kitchen basics Host confirmed, leave towels as Ask host, choose I'll prepare it for the first-aid and flashlight category while checking the remaining contents, and mark chairs Not needed. Review who handles setup and collection. Your choices and marks are saved in this browser when storage is available. Recheck them for each booking, use Clear saved plan to start again, and copy, download or print an offline version.
